![]() As an Englishman, we all laughingly hate them but as I grow older I find those scenes where he's beaten unconscious, slapped in the back of a van, and later, when he wakes up, he gets gang-bashed again quite appalling. In a film of crims fighting, lying, cheating and killing other crims, the only thing I didn't like was the savage beatings of a traffic warden. Even nasty boy Rory Breaker gets laughs out of me and he's meanest mother in town. There's also the 'Yardie' drug growers who are all upper class public school white boys. Another is the comedic secondary character Nick the Greek. One of them is Soap's (Dexter Fletcher) monologue about knives. There's a bit of Wagnerian lietmotifs going on.įor a drama, I find moments of great comedy. ![]() ![]() It's well chosen and matches the character when used to introduce him (I say 'him' as there's barely a female character in the whole film). A great example is when a character loses at cards and the camera gets in his face as he walks out.Īnother must mention is the music. Ritchie is on top form here in his directing debut, and along with producer Matthew Vaughn they crafted a truly classic film. A group of four friends get into dodgy business after losing a fixed cards game organised by "Hatchet Harry" and his side-kick, "Barry the Baptist." This is the quintessential British gangster film, and is one of the very best. Guy Ritchie has this and Snatch to his name, so he has that. However, if you haven't seen a movie in a very long time and are re-discovering it then exceptions may be made.
